Walk On!

time to start ambling about once again. and in the event you haven't read it of late, The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
and sorry I could not travel both
and be one traveller, long I stood
and looked down one as far as I could
to where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair
and having perhaps the better claim
because it was grassy and wanted wear;
though as for that the passing there
had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
in leaves no step had trodden black.
oh, I kept the first for another day!
yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference.

Ah Frost, he had a lover's quarrel with the world.

Lost!

No, it wasn't members of GHBW who were lost yesterday at Buttermilk Falls in bucolic Mendham, NJ. Seven adults and nine kiddies took in the pastoral sights and sites whilst handling the local fauna and inhaling the dandy spring flora.

No, twas not us who vanished into the bear-infested woods, but rather the majority of the digital images of our earthly spirits, which mostly came out jumbled and distorted on my canon's compact flash card. me knows not why. could be because buttermilk falls is an old iroquois burial ground and the great spirit put the whammy on my pocket digicam. or could be further prove that technology ain't without its flaws.

Fortunately, a few minor gems were preserved so that our presence amongst those dead indians, who we slaughtered unmercifully all those eons ago, can be documented.

Sunday May 4

Hark! Another stroll out on the horizon!

Yes, after a long lazy layoff wherein I fell out of this tree, broke my tibia, and put on 20 lbs., it's time again to stroll.

Weather looks a little iffy for Sunday but we'll give it a try.

Time: 1pm. Place: Buttermilk Falls in Mendham.

Directions:  Center of Mendham (Black Horse Inn. ) Take Mountain Ave. north. It will turn into Calais Rd. beyond Mountainside Rd. Continue straight up Calais for a couple miles. Right before the dead end turn left onto Parkwood Lane. Drive down Parkwood to the parking lot on the left.

good walking!

Vipers, Mastodons, Willy's D

An Impromptu Walk on Sunday along the Zambezi River in British Honduras spilled forth a plethora of riches. First Adam S. and sidekick Matthew L. uncovered mastodon bones, which, according to resident animal authority Dr. Jamie M., date back some seven billion years.

Next the intrepid explorers stumbled upon a river rattler, a very venomous viper, that chased our young ones, bit two of them (Molly J. and Elizabeth S.), but fortunately resident venomous viper authority Patrick L. was able to suck the venom from the youngsters' legs so we could continue our trek through the wilds.

Next we stumbled upon an ancient stainless steel deloren, which resident windbag Willy S. promptly declared his own.

And finally we gathered to break bread, and wind, before setting off for home and settling in for 12 consecutive hrs. of masters coverage.

Hacklebarney Park

As the economy bursts and budget cuts in the garden state bloom (including the closing of several state parks) one small gem remains constant: pristine Hacklebarney Park in Chester, NJ. My mom took me to Hacklebarney when I was just a tot, and now here comes Elizabeth along with chums Matthew, Gracyn, and Sophia.

Also on hand were Mrs. S., H. Santoro, G & B Byrnes, and Mr. & Mrs James Rudolph Vanderpoel of Hastings on the Hudson, NY.

Twas a fine hike on an early spring day. No one was hurt. No one fought. Life was good.

Through the Looking Glass

alice (above) the mad hatter (my bride) and i will be walking this sunday at high noon from hacklebarney park in chester. the park offers excellent trails, pleasant scenery, a river where the kiddies can throw rocks and get their knickers wet, and a nice dose of tranquility.

so come on out for a wee stroll on a fine spring afternoon.

Lovely Spring Walk

Susan, Montana and I took a brisk two hour walk yesterday through the Black River County Park Trails, www.morrisparks.net. We started from the parking lot at the Kay Environmental Center off of Pottersville Road in Chester. We followed the red trail most of the time except for one foray down the hill to the river. (The dog needed a drink.) It was a beautiful park. The red trail stayed close to the Black River most of the time. I would recommend another outing here to check out the blue trail before biking season gets into full swing.

Happy trails.

The Green Mountain State

I slipped into the state of Vermont for this Sunday's walk.

I was an army of one but I had nothing to fear but fear itself. And maybe the a-hole up at Blairsden who treated me like I was a Mideast terrorist come to rape his women and pillage his Somerset Hills hideaway. Ah, how money and property corrupt.

I told him where to shove it, but when I tried to take his photo, the coward threatened to call the Gestapo.

I reluctantly put away my trusty canon and walked on. In peace.

Another Sunday Stroll

We had a grand total of four strollers for last Sunday's chilly walk at Christy Hoffman park. Nevertheless, a fine time was had by all as we traversed mud and muck, outwitted a pack of blood-thirsty wolves, and made a mad dash for safety when evildoers attempted to kidnap us for a short journey to a faraway place.

We'll do it again this Sunday. Time, for Heather, who undoubtedly will not show, is 1:30. The place: Natirar. This will be an easy, flat, one hour stroll. It may be a tad wet but the skies should be clear and the weather cool. Bring the kids, the canines, and the weed.

Looking forward to the hike...last time there we were XC skiing!

Sunday Hike

Sunday looks like a spectacular late winter day.

I'm going to take a hike up at Fairmount Park in Tewksbury. I think they also call it Christy Hoffman Park. It's on 512 (W. Fairmount Rd.) between Pottersville and Califon. Call me (234-9383) if you need further directions.

1 pm. Probably around an hour, hour and a half. It might be a little mucky after the rain so wear boots. Kids and dogs welcome, tho it'll be tough to push a stroller.

Hope to see you Sunday.

Ah, Sweet March

Downing and Simpson showed up for the second week in a row, along with a fresh squad of walkers, including one or two who looked a little pickled from the First Infusino Rock n Roll Show.

As you can see, this week we had dogs and kids. we also had a grandmother, who fled with some stud in a gray saab before i could get her pic.

walk on!

Sunday!

Well, it's March so let's get out and march. Sunday looks like a cool sunny day. I'm thinking a nice easy one hour stroll from the Peapack pond at 1pm.

It'll be out and back so go as far as you like at your own pace. Bring the kiddies, dogs, and yes, why not, even the spouses.

Great Day!

Beautiful day for a stroll along the Black River. Bill, thanks for organizing! Joann, Jim and I went to the organic meat farm later in the afternoon ... they were out of many cuts - you must have stocked up!

I will be on the beach in St. Johns next weekend ... look forward to seeing the Gladpack Walking and Hiking Club soon!

Inaugural Stroll

We had a nice turnout for our first walk. Mostly it was the die-hard cycling crew who spit at cold, damp, dreary weather.

Actually it was pretty pleasant out there once we walked a while.

So anytime you're going for an amble, a cruise, or a constitutional, let us know. We're excellent conversationalists and reasonably amusing.

Invites

I sent out a bunch of invitations, but undoubtedly missed a few folks. Let me know if you want anyone invited and I'll sent them an email.

Walk on!

It clears the head, helps the heart, tones the muscles.

Welcome!

Take a look at the description on the right and you'll see what this is all about.

I've given up running but have been walking since the fall. It's pretty good exercise and you can do it with a minimum amount of fuss in just about any weather. So come on out and give it a try.

Weather might be a little funky on Saturday the 23rd but I'll be going for a one hour walk at noon leaving from the Pottersville Reformed Church in Pottersville. This is a very scenic out and back walk along the Black River, so you can turn around whenever you feel like it.

Bundle up the kids, slip on your muckers, and let's roll!
